Your description of Musk's G20 quote--an encouragement to build data centers--does not match the quote itself, which is about a power shortage. Furthermore, your quote does not appear in the cited source. Instead, the source contains The Information author's summary of Musk's statements.
In other words, you've taken a paraphrase, rephrased it to appear as a direct quote, incorrectly attributed it, and then incorrectly summarized it. That's a bizarre series of editorial errors.
Hi Matthew — sorry I’m only just seeing this. The quote you refer to is real; you can see it for yourself here https://x.com/SawyerMerritt/status/2094809478357033349. We linked out to a report summarizing the quote rather than actual thing; I’m not sure why that happened but we’ll try not to do it in future.
Thanks for replying. I hoped the cause was something like that.
I will note, though, that Sawyer Merritt’s tweet is also a summary of Musk’s quote, and Transformer’s article is clearly based on the summary instead of the actual quote. For example, at 1:03, Musk says “there will be at least a 15 gigawatt shortfall”, but both Merritt and Irwin omit “at least”.
Also, I’m still concerned by Transformer’s characterization of the quote, which remains in the article. As I said before, Musk was talking about power plants, not datacenters, and the linked video makes that even more clear.
